Fig’s Finds: Kelly’s 30-Minutes to Fitness: Weights

Today I did Kelly Coffey-Meyer’s 30-Minutes to Fitness: Weights workout.  Actually I only did Biceps/Triceps/Shoulders, which is Workout 2 on this DVD.  It’s actually a bargain of 2 great workouts on one DVD, with some great premixes including different active rests between sets (abdominals, standing abdominals, and cardio) and a couple total body premixes.  It’s really a great workout for the price (currently on sale for only $16.95 at Advanced Workouts).

I actually briefly reviewed this workout a little over a year ago, so I’ll try not to repeat myself too much, but I just want to emphasize again that it’s a great workout.  With the workout I did today, she does one exercise for each body part (biceps/triceps/shoulders), then repeats it twice.  Then she’ll do an active rest for a couple minutes.  Like I said, I chose standing core work today–nice to occasionally do ab work that doesn’t involve traditional crunches.

I’d call this an intermediate workout, though she gives advice on weights for beginner, intermediate, or advanced exercisers and has a modifier for beginner moves for some exercises.  I mainly went with the beginner weight since I’m so out of shape since my pregnancy, though I went ahead and went heavier for the final section (where she goes heavier and slows down).  In each section I found that for the first set of 3 exercises I felt that I should have gone heavier, but by the third set I was really feeling it and struggling.  Next time I’ll probably go a little heavier.

As for Kelly herself, she is her usual encouraging but no-nonsense self.  I love her style; she’s definitely one of my top 5 instructors.  She also has beautiful muscles and looks great, but doesn’t flaunt it or try to look sexy (I mean, I’m sure she’s sexy and all, but she doesn’t look like she’s trying too hard for that).  Anyway, I always feel like Kelly is pushing me and not wasting my time, but she does it with a friendly smile.  I’d love to work out with her in person some time.

Positives for this workout:

  • Limited equipment–only need one or two sets of weights and a towel, plus maybe a mat if you want to do the floor core work.
  • It’s indeed only 30 minutes if you do it as is.
  • Feels very effective
  • Lots of options
  • Inexpensive
  • Kelly herself

Negatives for this workout:

  • She goes a little fast — you couldn’t go very heavy with it.
  • OK, that’s all I got — love this workout.
