You’ll notice I’ve changed the full blog title to reflect the addition of new contributors. So far we have introduced Celeste, Donna, and Kimberly and I have a couple more women lined up who will hopefully be posting in the next few weeks. I won’t be changing the URL as I’ve paid for the fitfig.com address for a couple years in advance and we’d likely lose people looking for us anyway.
On an unrelated note–if you are a Catheite or other fitness contact who was friends with me on Facebook and I unfriended you, please don’t take it personally. I have made that profile just for family and a few local people. I am moving my other friends to a new account. I’ve tried to add in my old friends but I’m sure I’ve missed a few. If you’d like to find me there send me an email to fig [at] fitfig.com and I’ll let you know what name to look for. If you’re a friend of my friends you may notice me on their lists anyway.
Sara invited me to post and Fig graciously allowed me to join up! I’m excited, fitness has been a passion for me all my life and I love to write up my impressions of the workouts I do.
A little about me – I’m a 40-something mother of one. Happily married with a dog, a cat and a bunny to round out the family. I work outside the home so I treasure my 5:00 a.m. workout time as it is my only “Me” time for the whole day usually! For example, right now, after a full day of work, I’m typing this while helping my daughter with her math project. It was pretty fun – we had to create a math game. She did a good job and actually did most of the work herself – including coming up with the concept and designing the board. Why didn’t we have homework like this when I was a kid?
I digress. I have been working out in some form or another since I was in high school. In those days, and through college I was a cardio hound – I ran and ran and ran some more. Didn’t do much strength training or any other cross training. In the early ’90′s I discovered the world of videos. I had a modest collection (it fit in a couple of shoe boxes!) until around 1998 or so when I discovered the FIRM. I actually borrowed the Tortoise and the Hare from the library on Thanksgiving weekend. After that, I was hooked and my collection (thanks also in part to the internet and sites like Videofitness.com) ballooned. I really have never taken a count of how many workout videos and DVDs I own. I think I would be embarrassed if I knew how many there were! I also have collected an array of equipment – BOSU, steps, various weights, stability balls, band, gadgets. We also have a treadmill and exercise bike – got those for DH, but he doesn’t use them often. (more…)
And here’s another awesome new contributor. Thanks so much, Kimberly!
Hi Everyone, I’m Kimberly. When I saw that Fig was wanting contributors, I immediately e-mailed her and expressed my interest. As I thought about what I wanted my first post to be, the words of my high school English teacher echoed in my mind “Kimberly, when you need to tell a story — start at the beginning.” So that’s what I am going to do.
My pursuit of a healthy lifestyle has not been an easy one. For most of my life, a high metabolism and lots of physical activity, compensated for my poor food choices. I was able to stay naturally thin until my freshman year of college. The demands of a full course schedule, late night pizza runs, and copious amounts of chips had me gaining “the freshman fifteen” and an additional 30 pounds.
This is the point where I would like to tell you that I modify my eating habits, became more physically active, and over the course of time lost the weight I had gained. But that is not what happened. Instead, I began using diet pills (at the suggestion of a college friend) which quickly lead to my developing an eating disorder. I battled my eating disorder for nearly 5 years before finally realizing that I needed help. With the help of my friends, family, and a great therapist, I have been ED free for 3 years. (more…)
Fig’s Note: This post is from one of the new contributors to Fit Fig. I appreciate Celeste joining me to write content! I promise not to interrupt her every post – just wanted to introduce her this once.
Well, let me start by introducing myself. I’m Celeste, I am married to Tim. We live in Annapolis, Maryland. I work in the marine industry. I have 4 “kids” that I adore. They are of the 4 legged variety. We have 2 horses (Frank and Tonka) and 2 Dogs (Muttsey and Sara). (I’ll introduce them more next time.)
I saw Fig’s cry for help and I’d been thinking about doing this on my own….and how ironic that Fig would post a help sign.
I’ve been struggling with my weight all my life. I’ve been exercising since 1997, lost 107 pounds….and when I got divorced, I put on 20 pounds….then I found my hubby…and he can eat everything and not gain a pound, I gain 30….oye. So, right now, I’m trying to lose 50. I’ve been struggling with this for a couple years. I did really well for a while and then the economy tanked and well…a lot of things happened to our little family. But, I’m getting my rear in gear. (more…)
I’m going to have to take a break from blogging for a while since I’m a bit overwhelmed with my newborn baby (boy #3–that should explain the overwhelmed bit). I don’t know how long until I can get back into the swing of things, but for the time being, consider Fit Fig on hiatus.
This week has been busy finishing up some sewing and preparing to leave town on Friday. We’re going to visit friends and family in Houston (yes, I know — terrible time of year to go to Houston — but at least everyone we visit will have air conditioning).
I’m not sure if I’ll fit in any exercise while down there. I definitely won’t be walking outdoors in the nasty muggy heat. I may just stick to doing some yoga moves when I get the chance.
We’ll be back August 8th so hope to be back online soon after. Check back August 9th for a giveaway — it’s been so long since I’ve done a giveaway!
I’m taking my little MacBook to the Apple store today for an appointment. Hopefully they can doctor her right up but I’m afraid they may end up taking her for a few days (and yes, I refer to my Mac as a she). This means I may not be online for a week or so (if it’s anything like last time she was sick). I don’t think it’s anything serious, though, so no need to worry – just minor surgery. Wish us luck!
Apparently I passed 500 posts without even realizing it. Of course a lot of my posts are very short so it’s not like I’ve written a novel here.
In other news, I’ve moved the forum. It is now linked to this site: fitfig.com/forum. Cool, huh? I don’t know if anyone will join–it’s been ages since my forum has seen action and I now have Fit at Home as well, but hey, it’s there if anyone wants to converse.
I’ve just merged the Links and Tools pages. I don’t know why I didn’t do that before. So if you’re looking for links, they’re all on the Fitness Fig Tools page now.
Yes! I’m very excited to announce that I’m guest blogging over on MizFitOnline today, one of my favorite blogs. I adore MizFit and her musings and I look up to her as a blogging queen, so I was very excited to have a guest post on her inspirational blog. Head on over and check it out!
Yes, we’re at the same URL but the look is all new (might still tweak it here and there) and I’m starting a new format.
We’re going to have some format to our days, something like this:
Sunday……………..Figaway (the giveaway–maybe I’ll just call it Giveaway and not Figaway)
Monday…………….Fig gets Fit (fitness plan for the week)
Tuesday…………….Tell Me Tuesday / Poll Day (I’ll ask a question and/or have a poll)
Wednesday………..Body Image Focus (talking about self-image, bodies, etc.)
Thursday…………..Fig Reviews or Fig’s Finds (workout/equipment reviews)
Friday……………….Fig’s Fun Friday! (silly/fun stuff–like Spider-Man Yoga)
Saturday……………Fig Eats (about nutrition, cookbooks, recipes)
We’ll start this tomorrow* when I announce the winner of our latest giveaway and post the giveaway for next week! Hope to see you here!
Things are quiet around here today because I’m contemplating a complete redesign of the Fitness Fig blog. So you may see things disappearing, reappearing, and then totally changing here for the next day or two. Right now I’m testing things out but it should be up soon.
Today I’ve added a Fig Bio page. It just tells a little bit more about me and includes a bit of a disclaimer to state that I don’t necessarily know what I’m talking about–well, I’m no expert, anyway.
Also, I just want to remind old readers (and inform new readers) of the other pages linked to this blog. You can find lots of good fitness links helpful tools to download on my Fitness Fig Tools page.
Also I have a Fitness Fig Shop on Zazzle (though I am the primary shopper over there). Not only do I have goofy Fig-decorated products, but I have a few items with funny drawings by my 6-year old.
Come back tomorrow to find out the winner of this week’s giveaway.
My friend Diana over at Diana’s Body Journey gave me an award. She said my Blog is Fabulous. Sweet, huh? Well, it’s like a blog tag because now I need to pass it on.
The Fabulous Award Rules:
You have to pass it on to 5 fabulous blogs.
You have to list 5 of your fabulous addictions.
Make sure you include the person that gave you the award and link it back to them.
Ok, honorees, don’t be shy, but don’t feel obligated either. This is a completely low-pressure award. For instance, I know Sarah recently had a bike wreck and is taking a blogging break, so I am just giving her the award for fun and not because I expect her to pass it on (and ’cause her blog is fab).
My 5 Fabulous Addictions:
My kids and my dog–so fun.
Cathe Friedrich workouts.
Travel and moving to new places (probably do the latter too much).
My Mac. I am way too attached to my laptop here.
Accessories–I just love fun and colorful purses and jewelry.
At the risk of sounding egotistical, I wanted to share some of my own favorite posts from this blog. It’s like one of those cheesy clip shows on television sitcoms. So here goes:
Well, I’ve been tagged by Leah on her Redhead Mama Blog over at BookieBoo so now I am supposed to tell you seven things about me that you do not know yet. And then I will tag seven other (hopefully previously untagged) blogs….
1.) I have a tattoo on my ankle–just a little cross inside an eyeball, which doesn’t sound as cool as I think it looks.
2.) I grew up with 9 siblings (2 brothers, 1 sister, 3 step-brothers, and 3 step-sisters). The most I lived with at one time was 7, which was plenty. I was the baby.
3.) I was a starter for the jr. high basketball team in 8th grade. We only had a total of 7 players, though, and we only won one game (and the score was a bizarre 9-0).
4.) That same year I was also the mascot, which means I dressed up in an over-sized longhorn cow costume right after playing games so I could root for the boys’ team.
5.) I’ve lived in 6 states (Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Virginia, New York) and 2 other countries (England, the Netherlands).
6.) I have recently become obsessed with doing crosswords in my spare time (or in time I should probably spend doing something else). It was something my granny loved to do and I never saw the appeal until now. I’m becoming my granny, which is fine because she was pretty cool.
7.) When I was about 12 I had a duck named Marcellus Demetrius, Demmie for short (and my step-dad re-christened him Homer). Demmie thought he was a dog, though, and followed around our dogs Pogo and Ivan (and they followed me). So I used to walk to the post office with 2 dogs and a duck coming behind (and sometimes another stray dog that followed the duck). The neighbors used to complain about our duck quacking at the moon. Demmie/Homer was run over one night while chasing cars driving home from the rodeo.
There ya go. Hope that was worthwhile. Now, to pass it on….
I’ve added the link to Cathe’s October rotation to my Fit Fig Tools page, which reminds me I keep meaning to add some more random fitness links over there at some point. Anyway, there are many fun links over there already–shopping, blogs, nutrition info, etc.
Last, there’s my Fit Fig Forum (which is mostly deserted now). It’s still open. I mention this particularly for Amy Bento’s fans, since her forum is currently out of service. There’s an Amy spot on my forum if you want to come chat.
I have to take my Mac back to the Apple store tomorrow. They called and said the part was in so I have to come drop it off. Eek! I hate the words “drop it off” when related to my beloved laptop. Wish me luck.
In other news, I just read this fun Mid-Week Challenge on Mark Salinas’ blog. I won’t be doing it until later in the week, though. I’m thinking about doing it on Friday.
OK, off with the computer and I don’t know when I’ll be back again. Have a great week!
